Air India flight AI126 from Chicago to Delhi was forced to return mid-air after 11 out of 12 onboard lavatories became inoperative, leaving over 300 passengers with only one functional toilet. The Boeing 777-300ER, which took off on March 6, 2025, turned back after flying for more than four hours and landed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport after nearly 10 hours in the air.
According to sources, the aircraft has 10 lavatories, including two in first class, and carries around 340 passengers. The issue worsened mid-flight, leading to the decision to return. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft reversed course near Greenland before heading back to Chicago. Air India confirmed the return, citing a "technical issue" and stating that all passengers and crew disembarked normally.
In an official statement, an Air India spokesperson said, “AI126, operating from Chicago to Delhi on March 6, air-returned to Chicago due to a technical issue. Upon landing, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimize inconvenience. Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination.” The airline also offered full refunds and complimentary rescheduling options for those affected.
Passengers expressed frustration, with some claiming that the crew was aware of the issue before takeoff but proceeded with the flight. A traveler reported that the captain did not initially announce the U-turn, and passengers noticed it on the flight map before raising concerns. Meanwhile, a video circulating online showed travelers discussing the situation with a crew member mid-flight.
Lavatory failures have caused diversions in the past, but this incident affected a long-haul flight with a full passenger load. The airline is working to rebook travelers, though many are facing difficulties with rescheduling. Passengers booked through airline partners are reportedly struggling with refund claims, adding to their inconvenience.
